Position Summary

The New Mexico Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) program is hiring a Program Coordinator to assist the program team. AHEC is a national program funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, that has been in operation for nearly fifty years and has programs in nearly every state and territory. The goal of AHEC is to increase the healthcare workforce in rural and medically underserved areas (MUAs) of the country by supporting "grow-your-own"/ "pipeline" programs, clinical experiences at training sites in rural and MUAs, and continuing education for healthcare providers in rural and MUAs. A more recent initiative is the AHEC Scholars Program, a two-year program that provides students from a variety of health profession programs from around the state with curriculum and experiences focused on core topic areas.

The NM AHEC program is based at the University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine and is supported by the Family and Community Medicine department. It consists of a program office at UNM and three AHEC centers in Las Vegas, Las Cruces, and Silver City, NM. The program office staff consists of the program director and program manager. Each of the three NM AHEC centers has a director.

The Program Coordinator position will primarily support the program director and program manager, but will also provide broader administrative support to the program as needed.

The ideal candidate will be extremely detail-oriented; independent coordination of all day-to-day aspects of the AHEC program needs; writing, editing, and publication of marketing, promotional, and/or educational materials and integrated reports specific to the program; day-to-day team interaction with, liaison between, and coordination of a wide range of internal and external constituencies involved in program activities; have a love of data and accuracy and the ability to describe evaluation results and data in layman’s terms; and have a thorough understanding of data-related software, especially Excel. A knowledge of REDCap and Smartsheet is a plus.

Specific Duties include:

  • Provide a variety of professional, administrative, and/or clerical services to the program, such as responding to emails from AHEC scholars, website upkeep, scholar recruitment activities, taking minutes at meetings, newsletter upkeep, etc.
  • Provide support with the Primary Care AHEC TeleECHO clinic by sending out calendar reminders, keeping up with presenters’ schedule working with CON, etc.
  • Design/develop and implement data quality control procedures and clean data collected weekly through evaluations completed by NM AHEC scholars and quarterly from the center directors.
  • Design/develop and implement continuous quality improvement procedures based upon quarterly/annual report findings.
  • Tabulate data for monthly status reports to the AHEC scholars and center directors and quarterly and annual reports to the funder.
  • May lead, guide, and train staff/student employees, interns, and/or volunteers performing related work.
  • May participate in proposal writing and funding searches.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Clerical, word processing, and/or office skills, especially with Microsoft 365, teams, outlook, and Adobe.
  • Ability to prepare research reports and proposals.
  • Ability to utilize statistical computer software.
  • Knowledge of research methodology, principles and procedures.
